Dick Gordon, a theoretical biologist, investigates waves in embryos and the way in which the cell in a tissue reacts to these waves changing into another kind. Each tissue is split into two tissues by differentiation waves.

He came up with a concept of the differentiaion tree as a bauplan of an organism. He assumes a bias for increasing tree size, which leads to a mechanism for progressive evolution.
