July 2007

Recently Boing Boing decided to deep-link through to audio of the Douglas Adams Speech at Biota II. Whilst this was an important speech, it is disappointing that bandwidth was taken from the site without passing on the contemporary development of Biota.org. I have changed the related deep links to highlight;

Carrying on from last month's news, there is an Important News page relating to the ...AtHome projects.

April 2005

Following extensive debate through the Darwin@Home mailing list, the Darwin@Home project with solidified objectives was renamed Biota@Home. This sub-project of Biota.org has a draft white paper online to explain more. The final white paper will also be posted at the same link.

January 2005

This month saw the launch of Darwin@Home by Bruce Damer at USC. Darwin@Home is the first major Biota.org project in recent years.

Due to the overwhelming interest in the new project, Bruce has passed the editorial and maintainance duties of Biota.org to Noble Ape's Tom Barbalet.

Top on Tom's list of priorities, having updated all the links on the site, is to encourage ALife developers to submit new projects, papers and interviews to Biota.org.

Steve Grand was awarded the OBE in the New Year's Honours List.

For those of you unfortunate enough not to be British, OBE stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and is a medal of achievement awarded by the Queen, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. Admittedly there's not much British empire to be an officer of, these days, but it's quite an honour and comes at a really appropriate time for Steve and his technology vision - marking the transition between the old and the new in more ways than one. Steve is delighted to be able to add OBE to the letters after his name, supplementing his GCSE in Woodwork and a Bronze Swimming Certificate. The investiture ceremony will be some time during the year, and we'll let you know how it goes. Steve in a morning suit is a sight to behold!
