Ancient Oaks Winter Snowfall 2001 In early February 2001 we experienced our first ever snowfall here at Ancient Oaks in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We awoke to a weird world of whiteness replacing the normal ever present green of the redwood forest. We were awestruck by the change in appearance of the gardens and neighborhood and only slightly horrified by the tremendous crashing of the many many limbs of great redwood trees letting go. Coastal redwoods were not designed by nature to bear the weight of snow so "pop" out come the limbs, crashing down some times over two hundred feet. It is a good thing we dont live under these great trees. The ancient oaks were worrisome enough. Take a gander, it may not be ususual for you but it sure was for us!!! |
