Dark City and Beyond

George Lippert, the winer of the Adobe Beta World Design Competition with
Dark City, now offers us more stuning worlds to explore..

George tells us about his winning world and the worlds he is making now
Dark City is my first world created using Adobe Atmosphere. It began as the Ham On Rye Diner, a retro eatery sporting a juke box and a lunch counter, and simply grew into a complete city sporting a subway and elevated train, gas station, boardwalk, lighthouse, piers and army base. The related worlds which interconnect with Dark City combine to make an extremely expansive and immersive set of environments. Some of the related worlds include:

Hangar 13

Buried seventy feet below the Dark City Military Base, Hangar 13 is a top secret secure facility housing some of the governent's most clandestine and remarkable relics. The truth is out there.

Space Station Nimoy

Enter the secret portal found in Hangar 13 and find yourself hurled through space and time to the indeterminate future aboard the USX Nimoy, exploring the deepest reaches of the galaxy. The Nimoy is one of my personal favorite worlds, as it is a complete working environment both inside and out. WIthin the space station, explore three levels of interactive rooms, including the bridge, the launch bay, control rooms, engineering, crew quarters, and the lab featuring an alien autopsy. Outside the station, avoid collisions with flying fighter craft and seek out the interesting space junk which populates the dark reaches or space, from a WWI Fokker tri-plane to a drifting shuttlecraft.

The Subway

accessed through the tunnels beneath Dark City, the subway is a warren of intersecting tracks and dead ends. Hang out in the power plant or strike off in search of the boarding station and your ride out, but keep an eye out for the subway trains which run day and night. The Submarine Ride: The USX Samundra floats at dock near the boardwalk of Dark City. Board it and take an undersea journey through crystal caverns, past ancient wrecks, and even through an Atlantean ruin. The submarine ride is one of the worlds I am proudest of, as it marks, I believe, the first use of a completely imported environment, which rotates slowly around a small, static object (the submarine itself), thus creating the illusion of a perfectly smooth ride through an endless panoramic world.

September 11th Memorial Garden

Located on the river shore of Dark City, the garden was a late addition to the world of Dark City. No explanation is needed, I suspect. The Memorial garden was designed to be a quiet place of remembrance, with a meandering stream and bridges, trees, a reflecting pool, and three monuments. Technically, it features a convincing reflective surface on the water by use of inverted geometry beneath a moving transparent plane. I am particularly pleased with the monuments, however, and the collage of images from that fateful day, surrounding a golden model of the twin towers themselves as they once were. The Garden is my own response to the events of September 11th, 2001.
