About Nelson and Winnie Mandela
Nelson Mandela is the outgoing president of the Republic of South Africa. Winnie Mandela is his former and recently divorced wife. They first met during childhood near Nelson's tiny village in the Xhosa region of southeastern South Africa. Winnie was instrumental in supporting Nelson's struggle against the policy of Apartheid but then later fell out with him and the African National Party. She was accused of the murder of a young activist, for which she was not found guilty but then later admitted some involvement at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings in late 1997(see below). Nelson recently remarried.
Also see our pages on Robben Island Prison, which was home to current South African president Nelson Mandela and many others incarcerated as political and common criminal prisoners during the last 3 decades.
Also, visit our pages on Soweto contain images of the former home of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela's current compound.
